Ramblings

Today there has been fighting between Buddhists and Muslims in Meiktila, Myanmar. At least five mosques have been torched and over twenty people have been killed.

It’s been so simple to settle back into normal life after returning from SE Asia, reverse culture shock occasionally kicks in as a reminder of the worlds I’ve experienced that are so parallel to my life in Australia. Like a customer complaining about a dirty cup, or a friend who doesn’t like the taste of tap water. I often have to remind myself the trivialities of my problems are nothing compared to those experienced by others (Yes, it’s all relative, but that’s a whole other discussion). I reflect on the compassion I have been shown by countless locals and travellers whom I’ve met whilst travelling and today I’ve been reflecting on this:

Surprisingly enough, people have conflicting values. These could result in being upset with a friend, violence towards those with a different faith or disregarding the university homework you should be currently completing (Ahem…). But my concluding thoughts are simple.

Show some fucking compassion.

Make the world just that little bit more peaceful.

NB: Irrespective of the topic of this post I would like to acknowledge the losses of at least fourty-two people killed in an accidental fire at Mae Surin refugee camp on the border of Myanmar and Thailand. My heart goes out to all whose friends and family have been affected.
